- Gray is a good universal color. It reduces the brightness and has the least color distortion. Grey lenses provide glare protection, making them ideal for driving and general use.
- Yellow or gold lenses reduce blue light while allowing more light of other frequencies to pass through the lens. Because blue light can bounce and disperse a lot of light, it can produce a glare effect called blue haze. In fact, yellow removes the blue part of the spectrum, making everything bright and clear. These colors can distort color perception a little, so sunglasses of these colors are not suitable for activities that require accurate color identification.

- On a green or blue background, purple and rose lenses provide the best object contrast. So they are a good choice for hunting and water skiing.

Many manufacturers of sunglasses use a process called constant density to dye their lenses.
